#SENDFLOWERSTOGREENWOOD
I’m thrilled to share with you that Enemies of the Average has the great honor of joining in the memorialization of the Tulsa Race Massacre. Ginny will be traveling to Tulsa this summer to support the efforts of The Wild Mother and the Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission as they seek to properly honor, grieve, celebrate, mourn, and tell the true history of one of the largest single acts of racial violence in our country’s history.
“This year marks the centennial anniversary of Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Greenwood Massacre—a violent attack by a racist mob on the wealthiest Black community at the turn of the century, where men, women, and children were murdered on the very legacy soil they poured into. In the 100 years that have passed since the Massacre, there have been so few sincere attempts at honoring the lives lost. A thriving town lost. Legacies lost.”
What a privilege we have before us - to tell the true story of what happened in Greenwood, to name and mourn the lives lost. This is necessary work that heals and blesses all of us. The Wild Mother has planned moving floral experiences and installations that will serve as an encounter with beauty for all of us. I truly believe that flowers connect us to our emotions in profound ways. This will be a raw, emotional outpouring of love through through the medium of flowers, and it’s impact will be deeply significant.
You can find a wealth of information at The Wild Mother and the Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission. Please take intentional time to education yourself about Greenwood, and share what you’ve learned with others. Please consider joining in these efforts to use our Art as Medicine by donating to the #SendFlowersToGreenwood fundraiser. You can also use your own art as medicine by making your own floral arrangement and sharing it with the hashtag #sendflowerstogreenwood. However you choose to participate, please do not look away from this painful moment. Please allow it shape your understanding of justice and healing, please allow it to open you to new ways of coming together and building beautiful and honest community.
